Увы, как выяснилось, это проблема не только xmms-а.
Куча программ "пошла крякозябрами": как-то X-downloader, Gimp.
Gimp - особенно обидно, я с ним сейчас работаю.

Именно так.
И подозреваемый налицо:

Вычистил я все, кроме этой строки - и полная сухость!
