Эт значит pppd хочет организовать PAP авторизацию и не находит данных
для нее в /etc/ppp/pap-secrets
У меня была та же байда. Все решил очень просто, через Linuxconf создал
подключение (он там спросит надо ли PAP использовать), потом ручками
немного подправил сгенеренные им скрипты в
/etc/sysconfig/network-scripts в частности chat-ppp0 и ifcfg-ppp0 и вся
эта шарманка заиграла, причем даже стартует автоматом при включении
тачки и перезванивает при срыве коннекта, все очень корректно :-))
Ручной привод --
$ifup ppp0
$ifdown ppp0
соответственно.
Единственое, западло, это когда не используется PAP/CHAP авторизация, то
логин и пароли прописываются в chat-ppp0 и если в пароле есть символ "\"
то он расценивается как служебный метасимвол и провайдер даст одбой по
неверному паролю, средство -- ставить "\\" вместо "\" :-))
