Вот этот "японский шовинизм" и стал, со слов авторов stuphead, причиной
ветвления. Я совершенно не в состоянии понять, почему люди не хотят
использовать iconv. i18n в glibc-2.2 шагнула вперед весьма заметно,
глупо это не замечать.
Не всюду, к счастью, так грустно. Иван Паскаль из Томска очень серьезно
прочистил текст Xlib и сделал простую и понятную поддержку Unicode в
любой (!) locale. Это очень серьезное достижение и будем надеяться, что
авторы qt и gtk оставят свои убогие эксперименты в этой области и
используют нынешний потенциал XFree. Если бы еще кто-нибудь написал
приличную библиотеку Uniocode-печати (gnome-print чудовищно
бестолков!)...
