А в чем суть экспериментов? Я просто не знаю вообще, чем в линуксе
можно вытягивать данные с битых дисков.

Честное слово, ничего кроме установки ХР в раздел, где прежде
находился 2000, не делал. Причем, за день до этого, тоже самое провел
на соседнем компьютере, и все прошло удачно.
