XFree86 -configure рулит! :)
Правда не понятно что надо было инсталятору :(

слова VESA в списке доступных карточек при инсталации не обнаружил :(

Никакими манипуляциями в процессе установки настроить X server не
удалось. В графическом режиме все умирает, в текстовом при выборе
карточки S3Trio64V2/DX (есть там такая) получаем ошибку:(ЕЕ) No device detect
Надо сказать что установка на такое железо убийственно медленна :(
так что лишний раз эксперементировать с установкой с "0" не хочеться.
