Иными словами, идея та же - использование xargs с учетом тех или иных
ограничений на входные данные.

Вы хотите сказать, что вместо
printf %s "$TAG"
нельзя использовать
echo "$TAG"
?
Если так, нельзя ли услышать обоснование?

Я вообще сомневаюсь в целесообразности использования ID3v1-тегов, хотя
