Может не в тему, но проблемы могут быть из-за настроек БИОСа. Там может понадобится отключить(или включить) поддержку SATA для дисков(или что-то в этом роде).
Еще: не знаю как при инсталляции, но при выборе ОС можно задавать параметры запуска(строка внизу).
vga=0x314 - это 800x600 (если не ошибаюсь)

Уважаемые, друг просит помощи, пока он пытается подписаться на рассылку, отпишу сам.
Проблемы с установкой сервера на ПК:
Аthlon 1700+ 512Mb 266Mhz
NVidia GForce MX 64Mb
HDD WD 40Gb
монитор самсунг 17" CRT
у меня зависает когда я давлю ИНСТАЛЛ и запускаются исы монитор гаснет :(
может как то можно запускать инсталяцию в режиме 800 на 600
может как то можно сконфигурить Xorg или обойтись без него?
там пишется: старт Xorg tray 'vesa'
и виснет на этом
