Возможно, что-нибудь ставили или удаляли в предыдущее "включение",
за день до того? Или предыдущее включение было первым после установки?
Еще идея: hp-tools напортачить не мог? Надо, наверное, было сразу
посмотреть stat /etc/pam.d/system-auth, чтобы увидеть дату последнего
изменения (mtime)...
Кстати: не мог ли system-auth поменяться (ошибочно) при добавлении учетной
записи в группу lp? Что использовалось для добавления?
Ну и, конечно, можно поглядеть журналы за соответствующий период
на предмет еще чего-нибудь подозрительного или интересного - мало ли что.
