Получается как раз наоборот - для получения верной информации нужно
ещё смотреть на модель и знать её баги.

Сейчас в fdisk вроде бы реализовано именно такое поведение для случая,
когда устройство не выдаёт сведений о выравнивании. Хотя даже в
случае, если устройство выдаёт предпочтительный шаг выравнивания, но
он меньше 1M, fdisk поднимает его до 1M (это как раз должно помочь
кривым WD EARS).
Проблемы с таким вариантом могут возникнуть в том случае, если
устройство использует дополнительное смещение для выравнивания
(например, тот же WD EARS с установленной перемычкой "XP mode"), но не
сообщает об этом стандартным образом.
