Хм... Интересная ситуация:
ФФ установлен из тарбола, с офсайта. В системе пакетов *ФФ* нет.
Захожу в systemsettings, приложения по умолчанию, браузер.
Переключаю "Открывать адреса http, https" в положение "в следующем
браузере" и прописываю путь к стартовому скрипту ФФ
(/usr/local/firefox-3.6/firefox)
Переоткрываю systemsettings, и переключатель сброшен в дефолтовое
положение...
Кто то подтвердит?

Попробуйте вписать любую программу, присутствующую в PATH для проверки.
