Он руководствуется GtkSettings, в частности gtk-xft-rgba.
Мне, чтобы _включить_ субпиксельное сглаживание _страниц_, пришлось
вписать в .Xresources
Xft.hinting: true
Xft.hintstyle: hintfull
Xft.antialias: true
Xft.rgba: rgb
Заодно вернулся субпиксель в Qt4.
