Очевидно, придется качать с сайта производителя firmware, без которого
ничего работать не будет и которое должно будет загружаться в память
принтера перед началом работы. Соответственно, настройка потребует
дополнительных телодвижений. Ну, наверное, и шанс нарваться на глюки
теоретически выше, чем в случае с PCL-устройством.

Я бы заплатил. Тем более, там и аппаратная поддержка PostScript имеется.
