Apt пишет, что ядро 2.6.18-alt12.M40.1 уже установлено.
Пакеты с дополнительными модулями к нему, о чем было ниже,
тоже установлены. Теперь необходимо осторожно перезагрузиться.
Под "осторожно" подразумевается уверенность в том, что "я
смогу загрузить хотя бы старое ядро". Я бы по крайней мере
заглянул в /etc/lilo.conf
