Fork - с английского, вилка. В данном случае, подразумевается
ответвление от проекта, и написание на основе уже готового кода,
своего. Для примера, насколько я помню, ALT Linux это изначально
перевод Mandrake, который обрел собственное имя и репозиторий,
а так же - apt :). DragonflyBSD форк FreeBSD и так далее. ;)
