Какой именно -- /etc/iftab (имеет отношение к сервису ifrename)
или /etc/net/iftab (имеет отношение к сервису network имени
etcnet)?

Странный совет -- это фиксация наблюдаемой статической
конфигурации вообще-то. Бишь скрипт предназначен для миграции
на etcnet с ситуации "интерфейсы уже/ещё подняты, но надо
нарисовать конфиги для них".
