Почитайте книжку какую-нибудь. Например Робачевский UNIX первые две
главы. Она вроде есть в сети. Если понравится то по части
программирования можно читать дальше её же, а лучше наверное взять
Stevens Advanced Programming in the UNIX Environment,
Больше по части программирования ничего читать не надо. Голову забивать
ни к чему. Это если только не хотите стать Linux-кёрнель хакером. Для
прикладного программирования знать все эти дела совсем на обязательно.
Есть вещи поважнее -- изучите комбинаторную логику, теорию типов.
По части администрирования не знаю чево надо знать.
Наверное 'man service' (er, нету такова).
