Ого...
На первый взгляд напоминает или неподгруженность модуля ядра,
или какие-то пересечения по версиям кривые.
Если будете воспроизводить -- пришлите почтой эти файлики:
> > /var/log/Xorg.0.log
> > /etc/X11/xorg.conf
и вывод команд
lsmod
dmesg
(после можно опять переключиться на vesa)
