инструкции.

Насколько помню, это необязательно.

Если бэкенд не собирается зацепить USB-сканер без явного указания
пути -- я бы думал что-то с /etc/udev* насчёт организации
/dev/usbscanner при обнаружении сканера.
Буквально вчера писал багрепорт -- Nikon Super Coolscan 5000
бэкендом coolscan2 был поднят без каких-либо дополнительных
действий, в смысле scanimage -L и scanimage --eject проходили.
(другое дело, что _отсканировать_ ничего не вышло -- потому
и писал :)
