CD-версия Компакта 3.0 довольно сильно урезана, полная - DVD-версия. Ну или
(если есть хороший канал) раскоментировать в файле /etc/apt/sources.list
строчку находящуюся под этой записью # ALT Linux 3.0, а именно:
rpm [alt] ftp://ftp.altlinux.ru/pub/distributions/ALTLinux/3.0/ i586 classic
(Гном там вроде есть) и сказать # apt-get update

Не нужно превращать дистрибутив в Slackware
Почитайте документацию, которая идет с дистрибутивом или отсюда
http://heap.altlinux.ru/alt-docs/modules/. Там есть, как ставить и удалять
софт. Ну разве посоветую поставить графическую оболочку над apt - synaptic и
synaptic-usermode.
Некоторый новый софт попадает в backports, строчка будет выглядеть вот так:
rpm ftp://ftp.altlinux.ru/pub/distributions/ALTLinux/backports/3.0 i586
backports
http://backports.altlinux.ru/ - что такое Бэкпорты.
