Боюсь, pppd с поддержкой cbcp. Можете поискать на
search.altlinux.ru "ppp cbcp" и попробовать собрать себе
ppp-2.4.4-последней-сборки.src.rpm из Sisyphus, там опять
пытались это починить.

Ммм... возможно. Наблюдал только машинки с сетевыми.

В среднем так и есть: для USB-модема нужны драйвер и настройки,
а Ethernet-модем в режиме бриджа даёт сразу IP и достаточно
настроить сетевую карту (хотя в зависимости от провайдера может
ещё VPN понадобиться, но тут не советчик).
