В 2.6.18-std есть поддержка swsusp (варианта suspend to disk,
доступного в ядре без дополнительных патчей). Для использования
swsusp требуется mkinitrd не ниже 2.9.9-alt1.

А вот для работы ядра 2.6.18 с патчем suspend2 необходима ещё более
свежая версия mkinitrd - 2.9.10-alt1 (предыдущие версии ядер wks могли
работать и без поддержки в initrd, но для 2.6.18 это уже необходимо).
После обновления mkinitrd необходимо пересоздать initrd, например,
выполнив команду
/sbin/installkernel `uname -r`
(если нужно пересоздать initrd для текущей загруженной версии ядра).
При использовании lilo installkernel вызывает его автоматически, как
при установке нового пакета ядра, так что дополнительные действия для
настройки загрузчика в таком варианте не нужны (в отличие от прямого
вызова mkinitrd).
Вероятно, проще будет взять именно mkinitrd-2.6.10-alt1 из архива, а
не последнюю версию из Сизифа, которая тянет за собой кучу обновлений
(в том числе udev, не работающий с ядрами старее 2.6.15).
