Как обычный модем, при помощи того же kppp (здесь нюансы скорее с
инитстрокой -- у моего оператора "для линукса и других" есть на
сайте; возможно, с подключением телефоны). Сам использую gprsec
(пакет gprs-easyconnect, есть на DVD9 3.0).

Вот на нём всё должно быть. Может понадобиться подключить
репозиторий contrib (в /etc/apt/sources.list.d/чегототам.list
найти незакомментированную символом "#" строчку про main и
скопировать, изменив main на contrib) и сказать
apt-get update
apt-get install gprs-easyconnect

Не запускаются, в смысле? Ну так они тут бесполезны...

При его подключении в /var/log/messages что-то вроде такого
появляется?

Если подобное -- то в качестве устройства модема должно
заработать "/dev/ttyACM0".
PS: а почему в smoke-room@? Пойдёмте в community@.
