Кроме ssmtp.conf у меня еще в .muttrc:
set sendmail="/usr/sbin/ssmtp -au user_id -ap PASSWD"
для некоторых серверов возможно потребуется указать механизм авторизации.
Нужно еще другой MTA отключить.
