Пробую convmv для перекодировки дерева каталогов в utf8,
большая проблема с длинными именами,
не берет имена длиннее 256 символов.
Это принципиально?
И что делать, кто что посоветует

Либо взять исходники convmv и пофиксить, либо написать скриптик,
реализующий требуемую функцию.

В большинстве файловых систем (в частности, в ext2/3, reiserfs, jfs,
xfs) максимальный размер имени файла - 255 или 256 _байт_. Поскольку
в UTF-8 русские буквы кодируются двумя байтами, преобразование имён
файлов из однобайтовой кодировки в UTF-8 действительно может не
пройти.
