Очень часто машина виснет из- за "buggy" периферии. Предложил бы
извлечь/отключить в BIOS всю ненужную периферию, не грузить драйвера, без
которых можно обойтись....
Если не поможет, загрузить машину без графической оболочки в single user mode
/etc/inittab
id:1:initdefault:
Убедиться в отсутствии зависаний...
