В задачке спрашивается "кодировку". А рождённый ползать летает,
как известно, боком.

Этого в задачке тоже не было.

Глеб, не ожидал от Вас такой экспрессии в защиту этой дряни
(реализации ftpfs в mc).
На будущее -- читайте документацию, lftp умеет cat и less.
PS: как писавший эти extfs говорю. И как пользующийся для ftp
исключительно mozilla и lftp.
