Вы абсолютно правы в своих желаниях. Только вопрос с завимимостями
давно решен. xorg-x11 - это пустой пакет, не содержащий файлы, но
содержащий зависимости на все пакеты проекта xorg, в том числе и на
всевозможные драйвера. Это сделано для того, чтобы можно было при
помощи apt-get install xorg-x11 установить xorg и все, что для него
нужно. Поэтому вы можете спокойно удалить пакет xorg-x11 и все
ненужные вам пакеты с драйверами.
Вообще, такой подход - типичен для ALT-дистрибутивов.
