кажется можно стянуть из сизифа только ядро, система и ядро довольно
ортогональны,

большинство модулей запаковано в kernel-image. в kernel-modules только
специфика всякая, типа nvidia/alsa/...

все правильно. если есть nvidia - install kernel-modules-nvidia-std-26-up.
если нужна алса - ну Вы поняли :-)
еще можно install kernel-complete-std26-up - это виртуальный пакет
вытягивающий image и все -modules
