И тип MIME у этих неотображающихся картинок, скорее всего,
application/octet-stream?

Установите пакет mailcap - в нём лежит файл /etc/mime.types, который
необходим для правильной установки типов MIME для вложений. В пакете
sylpheed есть зависимость на mailcap, а вот в sylpheed-claws её не
наблюдается.
