Создаётся впечатление, что на машине было несколько экземпляров GRUB,
причём конфигурация редактировалась не там, где была используемая на самом
деле копия.

В /boot/grub/menu.lst в начальной секции (до первого title) должно быть
что-то вроде:
gfxmenu (hd0,0)/boot/splash/message
Номера разделов, конечно, будут другими (а если /boot вынесен в отдельный
раздел, здесь из пути надо убрать /boot).
