Это похоже на то, что в данный момент gstreamer не может обработать файлы
этого типа. Вполне возможно, со времен версии 0.8.1 до 0.8.8 произошли
какие-то изменения по части плагинов (а может и багфиксы), из-за которых
список пакетов gst-плагинов для М24 является неактуальным. Попробуйте
все-таки обновить до 0.8.8

Gstreamer и плагины для обновления вместятся на одной дискете. Может,
попробуете обновиться?

Странно, но у меня такой проблемы не наблюдалось.
Попробуйте почитать README.ALT в документации. Если н поможет - попробуйте
поставить gstreamer-plugins-ALL
