При наличии раздела то ли типа 0x05 (Extended), то ли в нём типа 0x0b
(W95 FAT32) - главное, что не LBA - за пределами 1024 цилиндра
scandisk из Win98 успешно гробил виндовый диск C: (D:, вылезавший за
эту самую границу, оставался целым). Именно такая таблица разделов
возникала при редактировании её через cfdisk.
Хотя таблица разделов как раз не портилась - исчезали данные в самом
разделе.
