Для использования аппаратного синтезатора карты. Если это
WT или XG, TiMidity может (а может и не) потягаться; а вот с
FM-синтезом даже сравнения нет -- сам в своё время на ESS1868
сперва делал wav, а потом уже их слушал (ну не тянула 486 :).
Кстати, не помню, есть ли вообще на 8738 что-либо кроме FM --
возможно, куда-то что-то и можно было подключить, но мой
экземпляр таких воспоминаний не оставил.
