Когда вы указываете ключ -X для SSH,
это означает, что вы хотите включить поддержку ForwardX11.
В этом случае SSH сам побеспокоится о том, чтобы установить
переменную $DISPLAY на удалённой машине. Там она будет указывать
как связаться с самим SSH, который в свою очередь
передаст исковые вызовы на хост с которого его запустили.
Подробности в man ssh / ForwardX11.
Задавать переменную DISPLAY на удалённом X-клиенте явно
и запускать
xhost +
на X-сервере нужно в том случае, если вы не используете X11-forwading.
Однако, это не очень-то хорошая идея: вы даёте возможность работать
с вашим X-сервером любой машине доступной по сети.
Вызывайте тогда уж хотя бы
xhost +IP.АДРЕС.X.КЛИЕНТА
