-lLibName попытается прилинковать libLibName. Соответственно -lz
-- libz. Другое дело, что это -- скорее исключение, которое
проще запомнить, ну или сделать apt-cache search lib z (чесслово,
даже ближе к хвосту вывалится :)

А ld не в курсе, как называется пакет.
