А что, если попробовать:
1) service sound stop
2) из /etc/modules.conf убрать все строчки, связанные с alsa
3) /usr/sbin/alsaconf (из пакета alsa-utils), дальше по идее он всё
должен настроить сам
4) в alsamixer'е выкрутить нужные ручки?

Значит, микшер. Если не отловите, чего за/раз'mute'ить в
alsamixer -- попробуйте service sound stop, заменить в
/etc/modules.conf "snd-intel8x0" на "i810_audio",
service sound start и aumix.

Да таже ерунда! Мать - MS6590, звук от ВИА кодек 9739А. Alsaconf нашел и
настроил. Звук был. До первой перезагрузки!!!! А теперь что хочешь делай --
ничего! Ругани нет, beep и другие мигают индикаторами и делают вид, что
играют, в aumix все настронено, в alsamixer PCM колонка не реагирует ни на
что и не поднимается (хотя aumix & kmix держат её на 100). Хотя до первой
перезагрузки реальный звук пошел, когда aumix поставил pcm на 100%. Так
сейчас и стоит. alsamixer тогда не запускал.

Покажите, пожалуйста, вывод lsmod после перезагрузки. Есть подозрение,
что сервис sound как-то криво поднялся.

Найдите и _выключите_ (M) в alsamixer регулятор IEC958 Input Monitor.
Регулировка громкости PCM работать не будет - кодек CMI9739 не имеет
аппаратного регулятора громкости для этого канала.

Полезнее был бы вывод amixer contents - на экране помещаются далеко не все
регуляторы. Хотя из этого изображения видно, что AC97-кодек,
установленный на плате, неизвестен драйверу (Analog Devices id 68 - на
самом деле это AD1888); возможно, дело в этом. В этом случае может помочь
только обновление ядра и модулей ALSA; можно также попытаться использовать
драйвер OSS (i810_audio).
