А он не "узнаёт", он "знает". И пытается установить этот режим
через XF86VidModeExtension. Наличие Modeline в секции Monitor
сообщает иксам как можно установить этот видеорежим, в
/var/log/XFree.*.log можно посмотреть какие режимы используются,
а какие отклонены из-за неподходящих параметров.
Кстати, есть проблемы с драйвером fglrx -

6. Bugs and Workarounds, Non-standard screen sizes. Мне помог
первый вариант решения - оставить в Display только одно
разрешение 1280x960, иначе у меня были доступны всего два
видеорежима (и для самих иксов по C-A-+/- и для
XF86VidModeExtension) - 1280x1024 и 1024x768.
