Эта галочка касается только винды. Сама винда по этой указке меняет
свою таблицу маршрутизации.

MAC eth0 привязыватся к IP удаленной и эта пара прописывается в
arp-таблицу. Но я точно не уверен, потому что proxyarp не использую.

Конечно, правильно и то, и другое, потому что работает и так, и так.
Критерий здесь как Вам нужно, чтобы работало. Я сразу выбирал вариант
с маршрутизацией без прокси.
