Я далеко не спец, но немогу не присоединиться к не менее захватывающей
ветке ответов :-)
Единственное попрошу меня поправить если ошибусь в идеологии
(именования пакетов).
Пакеты типа <что-то там>.src.rpm являются исходниками и подлежат сборке
приведенными ранее вариациями rpm(build) --rebuild и т.п.
Пакеты типа <что-то там>.i586.rpm (к примеру) - бинарные, и подлежат
установке посредством rpm -ivh (остальные опции по вкусу)
Пакеты типа <что-то там>.nosrc.rpm тоже подлежит _установке_ а не
сборке, т.к. они _nosrc_ (НЕ ИСХОДНИК).
Единственное, не могу внятно объяснить, в чем принципиальная разница
между *.i???.rpm и *.nosrc.rpm
