Можно и так:
#cp /boot/initrd /tmp/initrd.gz
#gunzip /tmp/initrd.gz
#mkdir /tmp/disk
#mount -o loop,rw /tmp/initrd /tmp/disk
Ковыряешь /tmp/disk; отмаунтишь его и гзипешь.
