Спасибо, Алексей. Вот руки добрались доделать. MS-ttf я
ставил из рпм-ки, поэтому fonts.dir и fonts.scale всегда
правильные, руками их делать не надо.

Вот это путь у меня так и не работает. Не знаю почему. Ms
шрифты везде видны. Ну я описывал.

А вот второй путь оказался рабочим и мне в голову не
приходил. Я убил Alpha.ttf из Windows/Fonts, и установил их
стандартным образом в X. Теперь можно работать, только
греческий стал ступенечками.
