А что бы это у меня могло висеть в третьем runlevel в top под именем [eth0],
причем не убиваемое по 'kill -9 pid', под init'ом в 'pstree -lupa' и при этом отсутствующее в
runlevel 1? arpwatch остановлен, в inittab ничего похожего не нахожу. Иначе
говоря - what's the f*** is it? ?-)

Кусок сетевого драйвера (например, 8139too так делает). Убивается
командой ifconfig eth0 down :-)
Конкретно 8139too в этом процессе периодически проверяет тип соединения
(10/100, full/half duplex).
