У меня эта строка закоментирована, а по умолчанию - '\'.

На каком этапе ошибка?
(Если Вам не нужна plain-text-авторизация через squid,
то действительно можно воспользоваться ntlm_auth.
Plain-text через ntlm_auth, кажется, сделан только в samba3.)
