У меня первые впечатления не столь мрачные.
Во-первых, меня сразу покорил инсталлятор. Мало того, что удобный,
но в нем есть уникальная возможность сразу указать полный набор
опций для fstab, в том числе в отдельных полях -- codepage и
iocharset. По-моему, никто другой еще такого не сделал.
Во-вторых, последовательно проведен принцип отделения
переменных, управляющих загрузкой, от исходного кода.
Файлы с переменными все собраны в одном месте: /etc/sysconfig.
Альтовцы ссылаются на SuSE как на дистрибутив, в котором
у рута тоже нет локализации, но дело в том, что в SuSE это
реализовано несравненно аккуратнее.
Недостаток i18n вижу один: инсталлятор не знает о возможности
выбора различных кодировок для одного языка.
Русский для него -- однозначно ru_RU.KOI8-R, поэтому для
иной локализации требуется ручная правка конфигурационных
файлов. Но к этому ведь нам не привыкать.
В общем, из трех основных "end user oriented" дистрибутивов
(RH, Mandrake, SuSE) я бы однозначно выбрал этот последний.
