Ядро можно грузить по DHCP. rootfs - по NFS или опять же по DHCP.
Все зависит от задачи/окружения/бутлоадера.
В общем случае флэшка нужна лишь для бутлоадера.
У меня пара армовских девайсов.
Один сейчас работает bootloader+kernel=1M, остальное по NFS
(обычный libc). У другого 8М флэш в который полмира
можно запихнуть. Но на нем я только rootfs держу, а ядро гружу
по DHCP (так надо). Временами и rootfs в сеть уплывает (NFS).
Так что - все зависит от конкретной задачи, окружения, девайсов,
возможностей бутлоадера. В девайсы - hands и head входят. :-)
Что касается ОЗУ - сейчас уже трудно и дорого мелкокалиберные ОЗУ найти... :-)
