А вообще с SU у вас всё в порядке? От рута можно сказать
su -l postgres -s /bin/sh -c /usr/bin/postmaster -D /var/lib/pgsql/data -S -r /var/lib/pgsql-root
например? Как ругаться будет (если будет)?
