Это странно. admrestart должен помогать. Можно почитать
/usr/share/doc/cups-1.1.18/README.ALT

А почему TRISTATE
В /usr/share/doc/kernel24-doc-2.4.20/parport.txt написано про
mode
PCSPP PC-style SPP registers are available.
TRISTATE Port is bidirectional.
COMPAT Hardware acceleration for printers is
available and will be used.
EPP Hardware acceleration for EPP protocol
is available and will be used.
ECP Hardware acceleration for ECP protocol
is available and will be used.
DMA DMA is available and will be used.
Что значит bidirectional я не знаю, и где-то что-то читал про
EPP, ECP, не помню. Но может попробуйте поставить в BIOS что-то
вроде Onboard Parallel Port Mode --Normal--
