Да, Гном тоже стал красивым. Честно говоря, дизайнеры постарались и там
и там (GNOME, KDE).
Но вот по поводу удобства у разработчиков GNOME и KDE весьма разные мнения.
Направления следующие:
KDE - удобство = очень много фич + сквозная настраиваемость + насыщенный
интерфейс + необходимые и достаточные для большинства пользователей
настройки по умолчанию
GNOME - удобство = вполне достаточно фич + упрощенный интерфейс + наименьшее
возможное количество настроек
(по словам Daniel M Duley, Aaron J. Seigo и Havoc Pennington)
Что удобнее - решать вам.
(великолепный пример для сравнения - konqueror и nautilus)
