а чем можно объяснить поведение X'ов: при прописывании в profile запуска screen'а X'ы не подцепляют выбор
оконного менеджера (wmaker,icewm,kde...), а загружают серый экранчик с дефолтным pixmap'ом и на том встают
если запущены из bash, а если запущены из screen сессии - все проходит как обычно. %-)

наверно тем что не просто из bash, а из mc запускаешь...

нет у меня mc в .bash_profile. :) Зато был screen , но с ним
