Что именно не влезает, в каком разрешении? Есть предложения, как
поправить перевод (но чтобы текст остался понятным)?
С панелью инструментов действительно плохо, но сделать там практически
ничего нельзя, только отключить текстовые подписи.
Что касается языка интерфейса - он переключается стандартным способом:
export LANGUAGE=en_US и вперёд. (Установка LC_MESSAGES может не
сработать, поскольку для GNU gettext переменная LANGUAGE более
приоритетна.).
Кстати, для claws русский перевод тоже есть.
